Leader – Q3 2023 – Integrated Reefer News

By Søren Leth Johannsen
CEO of Maersk Container Industry

Welcome to our 3rd quarter edition of our Integrated Reefer News in 2023. Again, we are pleased to provide you with a selection of news from MCI.

As the northern hemisphere summer holidays come to an end, we contemplate the first half of the year 2023. In this edition of Integrated Reefer News, we once again bring you the latest trends in refrigerated containers, manufacturing achievements, and a glimpse into sustainable refrigerants.

We have witnessed a surge in the integration of connectivity devices in our deliveries, nearly across the board. For Sekstant we are approaching 100,000 instalments which makes us firmly believe that reefer machine manufacturers are committed to setting the standard. Furthermore, on top of our intuitive web-based user interface, the seamless Sekstant API integration into container operators’ databases enhances efficiency and connectivity.

We are thrilled to announce that our new automated pre-treatment line at MCI Qingdao is operating at full capacity including high precision application of hot zinc metallization, providing our customers with superior corrosion proection. A significant number of reefer containers have already undergone this streamlined process. Additionally, our facility has year to date operated in two shifts, boosting production capabilities.

Reefer containers play a vital role in preserving perishables during transit. The focus on eco-friendliness has led us to explore advanced refrigerants. R513A, introduced six years ago, reduces Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 56%, significantly lowering carbon emissions over a reefer’s lifespan.

The next leap in driving down the GWP is R1234yf, known from the automobile industry. This refrigerant stands out with an ultra-low GWP of only 0.5. This refrigerant breaks down rapidly in the atmosphere, minimizing environmental impact. Its properties closely resemble R134a, ensuring compatibility with existing system design, service requirements and operation. R1234yf’s A2L rating ensures safety and its minimal greenhouse gas emissions make it the eco-conscious choice for reefers.

The MCI Reefer Conference 2023, held on 24-25 May in Denmark, marked a pivotal moment for the shipping and reefer container industry. Industry leaders, customers, and experts converged to address the pressing challenges of decarbonisation and digitalization. DNV highlighted decarbonisation’s significance, while we spotlighted Sekstant, our innovative connectivity solution. The conference showcased collaborative efforts shaping a sustainable future.

Our Star Cool Service Managers worldwide gathered at our headquarters for a vital annual event. The meeting fosters knowledge exchange, also to the benefit of the technical, sales, parts, and warranty colleagues. It celebrates our global team’s diverse cultural perspectives, enabling tailored services to different markets. The event empowers our team to enhance products and services through innovation, training, and real-world insights, ensuring exceptional support for our customers and service providers.

Finally, we will again be present at Intermodal Europe 2023 from October 10-12. If you are also attending the exhibition, then you are warmly welcomed at stand H30, just as last year.
