Built for the North Atlantic – How Eimskip and Royal Arctic Line Continue to Invest in Reliable Reefer Operations

Operating refrigerated containers in the North Atlantic presents unique challenges. Harsh weather conditions and remote destinations place high demands on both equipment and operators. For companies operating in these environments, reliability and efficiency are essential.

This is why two long-standing MCI customers, Eimskip and Royal Arctic Line (RAL), have recently expanded their fleets with Star Cool 1.1 refrigeration units. While their operations differ, both companies share a common focus on dependable cold chain performance and long-term operational value.

Eimskip: Investing in Efficiency and Flexibility
As part of its fleet renewal strategy, Eimskip recently selected 300 Star Cool 1.1 units.

For Edwin de Roos, Manager M&R Containers at Eimskip, the decision was driven by a combination of energy efficiency, operational continuity, and future flexibility.

“Spare part compatibility between Star Cool 1.0 and Star Cool 1.1 was an important factor for us, together with the energy efficiency improvements and the possibility to move to R1234yf in the future if required.”

By maintaining compatibility across generations of equipment, Eimskip can simplify maintenance and spare parts management while continuing to benefit from the reliability of the Star Cool platform.

Earlier this year, Edwin visited MCI’s production facilities in Qingdao, China, where he gained first-hand insight into the manufacturing process behind Star Cool 1.1.

“I was impressed by the efficiency of the operation, the dedication of the people, and the quality checks throughout the production process. The laser cutting technology was particularly impressive, both for its precision and because it helps minimise material waste.”

Eimskip has also chosen MCI’s Sekstant telematics solution, enabling direct access to OEM data and supporting closer collaboration with MCI when needed. This follows Eimskip’s successful adoption of MCI’s Intelligent Trip Inspection (ITI) solution, which reduced PTI time by more than 50% at its Aarhus depot. Read more here.

Royal Arctic Line: Supporting Arctic Operations

Royal Arctic Line plays a critical role in connecting communities across Greenland, where refrigerated containers help ensure a stable supply of food and goods throughout the year. This unique operating environment places exceptional demands on equipment reliability and performance.

Building on a partnership that spans many years, Royal Arctic Line recently added 100 Star Cool 1.1 units to its fleet.

The investment continues a relationship founded on reliability, energy efficiency, and operational support. These same qualities were highlighted by Royal Arctic Line in a previous customer story, where Star Cool’s low power consumption and dependable performance were key reasons for selecting the platform. The collaboration extends beyond equipment deliveries. In August, MCI provided technical training for Royal Arctic Line technicians, supporting ongoing knowledge sharing and operational excellence.

Commenting on the partnership, Esben Karl Jakobsen, General Manager, Container Management at Royal Arctic Line, says:

“Royal Arctic Line and MCI have worked closely together for many years, and we value the open dialogue and technical support that comes with the partnership. The new Star Cool 1.1 units have now entered operation and we look forward to continuing our cooperation as we support reliable, refrigerated transport throughout Greenland.”

Shared Priorities Across the North Atlantic

Although Eimskip and Royal Arctic Line serve different markets, both operate in environments where reliable reefer performance is essential.

Their recent investments in Star Cool 1.1 reflect a shared focus on efficiency, durability, and long-term value. Just as importantly, they demonstrate the importance of strong partnerships, supporting customers not only with equipment, but also with technical expertise, training, and ongoing collaboration.

For MCI, these relationships continue to show how trusted partnerships help keep refrigerated cargo moving across some of the world’s most demanding shipping routes.
