Building on strong momentum

By Søren Leth Johannsen, CEO

Dear reader

As announced in early October, from 1st November I am appointed new CEO of MCI, replacing Sean Fitzgerald who has decided to relocate to the US.  I wish to echo Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands at A.P. Moller – Maersk, with a big thank you to Sean for all his dedication since joining MCI in 2018. Sean has been instrumental in MCI’s transformation and is handing over the baton of a financially resilient company.

MCI is a high-performing and innovative company with a very skilled and talented organisation, and I am excited to take on the position as CEO. In recent years, the company has on a strong customer foundation focused on transformation, becoming the leader within container cooling technology. Together with customers and colleagues I am looking forward to continuing this journey.

My focus for the last 17 years with MCI has been on customer interaction, matching needs and catering for the after sales support needed in this industry. This has been a rewarding journey for MCI and me personally. Just recently I came across a quite heart-warming statement in a news release from Alaska Marine Lines relating to our delivery of 852 new Star Cool reefers, which shows me that we have come a long way on our journey.

The containers are the latest in efficient refrigerated operations. They feature advanced temperature controlling software that can vary the fan speed and control the compressor to match the conditions and current cooling demand. That translates into a power draw one-fifth that of older containers. Less power required to run the reefers means fewer generators running, less fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions.

“In the Southeast Lane alone the lower amp draws of the Star Cool units have allowed us to transition from running four or five generators on the northbound sailings to only one generator running 70-plus reefers,” says Steve Hardin, Director of Equipment & Maintenance at Alaska Marine Lines. “The savings in fuel and maintenance alone have been significant.”

Receiving such a tangible statement from a customer requires understanding of their operation and the complete value chain that enables MCI to deliver the right solutions at the right time. This ability is something I will target to grow and develop under my leadership of the company.
