MCI Reefer Conference 2025: Exploring the Evolution of Reefer Operation
On 14–15 May, we welcomed over 50 external customers to our 2025 Reefer Conference, held across two locations in Flensburg, Germany and Tinglev, Denmark. With the overarching theme “The Evolution of Reefer Operation,” the two-day event brought together industry professionals to exchange knowledge and perspectives on how reefer containers are developed, operated, and maintained throughout their lifecycle.

Industry Perspectives and Lifecycle Innovation
The conference opened in Flensburg at the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre, providing a fitting maritime setting for discussions around reefer production, operation, and sustainability. Presentations explored how manufacturing processes continue to evolve with automation and quality control measures, and how real-world cargo handling and cleaning practices can impact container performance over time.
The agenda also addressed major shifts in the industry’s environmental landscape – from the introduction of alternative fuels and new refrigerant types to the broader regulatory developments influencing reefer operations. The environmental focus was a fitting segue to the last session, which covered important lessons from MCI’s successful launch of the Star Cool 1.1 in October 2024. Day one concluded with a guided tour of the Robbe & Berking ship restoration facility and a dinner cruise aboard the m/s ‘Feodora II’, sailing the participants out of Flensburg bay to Sønderborg harbour for an evening of informal networking.

Testing, Digitalization, and End-of-Life Solutions
On day two, attendees visited MCI’s headquarters in Tinglev for a closer look at the company’s testing facilities and innovation work. The group was introduced to MCI’s new thermal test chambers and gained insight into how digital tools and data platforms like Sekstant are helping drive smarter service, predictive maintenance, and improved fleet efficiency. The day concluded with a focus on end-of-life solutions, including sustainable recycling practices and the role of remanufacturing in reducing environmental impact and extending the lifecycle of critical components.
Looking Ahead
The two-day event offered a comprehensive view of current developments and future trajectories in reefer operation and lifecycle strategy. With strong attendance and constructive dialogue across sessions, MCI views the conference as a valuable platform for industry learning and exchange.
We look forward to continuing the conversation with partners and peers at Intermodal Europe 2025 in Barcelona this October.
