Star Cool and its long time compressor supplier Bitzer uses energy efficient and reliable Compressor with a reduction of the energy consumption by up to 30% compared to conventional technology. This goes hand in hand with Star Cool's objectives to lead the reefer business in energy efficiency.

Advantages:
• Higher Efficiency: The 2-stage compressor can be used with an economiser sub-cooling circuit. By doing so, the capacity can be increased by up to 30 per cent at the low operating point.


• Higher Cooling Capacity: The volumetric efficiency is more than twice the value of a single stage compressor. In other words, less than half the displacement of the compressor is necessary.

The 2-stage compressor with sub-cooling is ideal for speed variation. The benefits of the above features combined with the digital expansion valve and the 2-speed condenser fans are overwhelming: A reduction of the energy consumption of up to 30 per cent compared to conventional technology. Complementing the refrigerant consideration on the environmental impact, the compressor is fully repairable, i.e. it is possible to repair the cylinder liners, bearing, drive parts, and motor. The use of seawater resistant aluminium does not only offer a decisive weight advantage, it avoids any use of paint, making the compressor corrosion free (by nature of its material).


The Bitzer-Star Cool design offers the best reliability potential for reefer container applications. The compressor runs with low piston speeds (even at maximum compressor running frequency), and the low relative speeds in all drive parts allow for practically wear free operation. In addition, the reed valve design ensures minimum moved masses resulting in minimal failure risk even at critical operating conditions. This is proven in millions of compressor applications worldwide.

Furthermore, thanks to the economizer circuit, the temperature after the first compressor stage can be reduced by injecting the relatively cool economizer gas. The resulting temperature level of the complete compressor is reduced, especially in low temperature operation. Due to the intermediate stage cooling and the high efficiency, the low thermal load of the 2-stage design enhances the durability of the compressor while improving the overall system performance. Finally, the suction gas cooling of the frequency converter power electronics ensures an optimal cooling of the electrical components.

In a nutshell, the fundamental approach of eco-efficiency can be put as follows: "Create more value with less impact". BITZER-Star Cool and their partners successfully and innovatively managed to implement these principles on the variable speed drive, aluminium 2-stage R134a compressor, while ensuring an irreproachable quality and reliability. This compressor, with its features and technologies, generated a breakthrough in the reefer industry and already encompasses the requirements for the next low GWP refrigerant step.
